If you’ve got no use for time

My sister utilizes Yahoo Answers for everything. It was her go-to guide during pregnancy, and it continues to be her confidant now that she has to care for an actual live person.

After a stressful trip to IKEA last night (where I was reminded that the real live too-good-to-be-true $150 couch does not look the same as it does online), Jamie and I returned home with a new chair, only to find its screws missing from the pack. Seeing as how the megastore is inconveniently located outside of the city (and it is also Labor Day weekend), there was certainly no way we would be making the trip back out for four screws that should have been included in the first place (unless they’d like to offer us some gas money. Didn’t think so).

So I turned to Yahoo answers, but no one wants to answer me. Seriously, doesn’t anyone know what size screws these chairs need? I’m even more convinced now that the Swedes are harnessing top-secret furniture information that just can’t be released or we’d all have to die. This comes after looking for slipcover options that aren’t sold at the store and finding only one overseas store that makes custom covers for $300 (no thank you, the couch was the same price).

Oddly enough, on the way to IKEA I had been reading a relevant story from the NY Times on my Blackberry (which Jamie protested, texting me ‘RUDE’). It was about Michelle Slatala’s similar situation of needing help because customer service is less than desirable for the simplest of things. She used several different Internet methods of question and answer communities, and she was able to figure out a spider set off her smoke alarm.

I’m not sure how I feel yet about these communities and if they actually help anything. So many questions are answered with the obvious: “What’s wrong with my dog?” answered with “Call your vet.” Helpful, thanks! I suppose I’m lucky no one has answered with, “Call IKEA,” though that’s what it’s come to and after being disconnected four times, we finally are having the missing screws sent to us and should receive them a whole week after we bought the chair.

I love the Internet too much, so I’ll just blame IKEA.

at least all the pieces were there for the coffee table, which i’m in love with. now we really do need more coffee table books–like 10.

I had IKEA drama recently as well.

How many people does it take to hang two “simple” wall shelves? Apparently four…and three trips to Home Depot to find screws that fit the damn things.
