That girl thinks she’s the queen of the neighborhood

I recently finished up writing two separate pieces on Girls Rock, a documentary about Portland’s Rock N Roll Camp for Girls. I found myself using the words “inspiring” and “inspiration” too many times, and not in the way that most people would use “unique” (a cop-out that hardly describes anything or anyone.) But honestly–the counselors were inspiring the girls, the girls were inspiring the filmmakers, and the filmmakers were inspiring me by putting it all on film. Talking to Emily Easton about Girls Rock Chicagowas inspiring. I had to go through my stories and try to take out my over-usage or else they would certainly be unreadable, much less inspiring.

Being a girl is hard, and for so many reasons. The girls aren’t afraid to tell you why. They came to camp afraid, and they leave unafraid. If only there were magical places for adults that helped us to do the same.

If ever there were a time to live vicariously.
